The Dangers of Elitism

By Brian | June 10, 2008

Have you ever been to an elitist church? I have. As Christians we need to be extremely careful with how we perceive both other Christians and other Christian churches. Have you ever read Christian writings from a specific group that seem to indicate that they have the only way to wisdom, knowledge, or the Lord? That their way of praying or their personal relationship with the Lord is somehow more intimate than other Christians’ relationships with Him? Have you ever felt that way yourself?

Brothers and sisters be oh so careful. Check out this verse:

I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.” - 1 Corinthians 1:10-12

When we begin to think that we are better than any other group than our actions display this belief. Our perceived  ”superior” relationship with the Lord begins to justify any action on our part. Some churches have gone so far from the Word as to justify anything at all. Divorce, child abuse, idolotry, lying, it can all be justified when we believe we have superior knowledge and wisdom.

I urge you to carefully examine your heart. Do everything you can to ensure that your following Him as the Word has laid out, not the doctrine of modern day Pharisees that will have you feeling superior within their law. There is but one inspired law and one inspired way. His.
